A Visit to Bedlam is OUT NOW!

It has been a very long time coming, for which I can only apologise. I feel a bit of an explanation is owed as I have had a few emails over the last few years asking about the series, Blandford, and what has been happening.

I looked at my diaries and realised that it had been seven years since the last escapade in the Seventeenth Century. I did have a Thomas Becket novel come out in 2020 and The Charioteer came out in 2021. Both had mostly been written before or during COVID, and the plan was to get back to Blandford in 2022. Unfortunately, life often throws curve balls. My Mum who had been struggling with COPD for years was hospitalised for a long time, and then came home to me as a primary carer. She followed this up with a second bout of breast cancer and a full mastectomy with only local anaesthetic because of the COPD… Anyone who knew Mum, knows she didn’t do things by half measures. Writing and teaching very much took a second place in my priorities.

Bedlam started off as a short story and just expanded. It seemed to be the only thing that I could write at the time, and slowly morphed into a novella and then into a full blown novel. My lovely godmother would come every week to give me a break and let me write and I slowly chugged away at it. The book was mostly finished when Mum passed away at the end of 2024, but 2025 passed along in a bit of a blur if I am honest. I came back to it properly at the start of this year and showed it to my publisher. I’m thankful that they liked it and spent the next few months working on edits and getting it ready for publication.

It is a bit different, in that Blandford himself narrates and appears but is not the central protagonist. However, everything that happens is very much canon to his first person narrative. Blandford’s own story: how he escapes the tower of London, his treason charge, and his adventures during the Second Civil War are now being written (tentatively called In Fortune’s Favour). Life permitting it will be ready at some point next year.
